Research Project:
Identifying Bramblett/Bramlett Soldiers of the Civil War/War Between the States (1860-1865)
Deb Dennis and Barb Sharkey
We have been working on identifications of Civil War Brambletts/Bramletts and relatives by blood or marriage with other surnames. We could use your help in confirming and documenting family connections and military service details for the soldiers listed below. Please keep in mind the following list is a DRAFT, prepared over a period of several months from a variety of sources, including descendants. The list is intended mainly to function as a research tool: Parts of it are not complete, so the entire list is not yet ready to be used expressly as a vehicle for disseminating documented information. We feel confident that much of the information is correct; however, some of the entries have question marks, which mean the information has not been confirmed, that it is speculation. Since we haven't seen all the service and pension records for these soldiers, this list probably contains some errors: Some names may be placed under incorrect family headings and some names may be connected to incorrect military service information. Some soldiers served in more than one unit and some share the same given name.
If you can confirm or correct any of the information and add more information to the roster, and/or make more positive identifications of those soldiers at the bottom of the list, please email mddennis--AT--grics.net or mike--AT--bramblett.com. (Replace the --AT-- with @ before sending your e-mail) Snail-mail: Deb Dennis, R.R. 3, Box 321, Lake Bracken, Galesburg, IL 61401. Please include the source/s for your information.
Many thanks, in advance, for your consideration and help. We will update the list as new information comes in.
Please Note: Names of soldiers below are separated into categories for the following Bramlett family heads who are PROBABLE children of William Bramlett I:
1) Henry Bramlett Sr. (with subgroups for his three known sons: Henry Jr., William Sr., Reuben Sr.),
2) Rev. William Bramlett Jr./II
3) Ambrose Bramlett
4) Sarah (Bramlett) Callaway Brown
5) Agatha (Bramlett) White
We have not yet located, documented and added to the list Civil War soldiers from the families of William Bramlett I's other child: Elizabeth (Bramlett) Buford. And no entries are on the list for James Bramlett who died in 1758 in Bedford Co., Va., and his sister Nancy Bramlett (probably children of William I) because no descendants have surfaced. The list also is subtitled to indicate type of army and residence/state. Soldiers from both Union and Confederate armies are represented. Names given are from service records; clarifications/additions of names are provided in brackets. The roster is not alphabetized: We have tried to group together closely related soldiers from particular families.

Rev. William Wesley Hall, Pvt, Co C? Love's Regt? Thomas' Legion?; Haywood Co., N.C.; Contracted typhoid fever [Son of Nancy Johnson and Enoch Hall, husband of Harriet Jane Bramlett, born 28 Dec 1833, died 17 Jul 1912, buried Few's Chapel Cem, Greer, S.C.]. "Grandma [Harriet Jane (Bramlett) Hall] was a loyal and faithful wife, besides being very brave. Grandpa [William Wesley Hall] went away to be in the Civil War, but he may not have had an opportunity to serve long because he contracted typhoid fever soon and was ill for some time. I do not know exactly where they were living in North Carolina or where he was when he became ill. Grandma was an excellent horsewoman, and I was told that she rode horseback 'many miles' to where Grandpa was and nursed him through his illness. In those days women wore long, full skirts, therefore they always rode side-saddle. It was not unusual for women to go to their husbands when they were ill or wounded. An example of Grandma's resourcefulness was during the Civil War when Grandpa was away and Sherman's army was coming through the South. She took the horses into the woods and tied them to trees so they would not be found by the Union Army, because they were taking horses along their way." --Clara S. Eldridge in Hall Memories.

Reuben Bramblett, Pvt, Pvt, Co K, 6th Regt, GA Cav: conscripted, enlisted Summerville, Ga., 1 Aug 1863, three years; present 1 Aug--31 Dec 1863 rolls; deserted 15 Jan 1864: Bounty due; POW: signed Oath of Allegiance Chattanooga, Tenn., 19 Mar 1864; vitals: 5' 6 " tall, florid complexion, dark hair, grey eyes; resident of Chattooga Co., Ga. (Son of Jane and James Bramlett? and husband of Harriett Harrison Swilling, born c 1819-20, died 1894 Paris, Logan Co., Ark., buried Logan Co., Ark.) R. "At the age of 43 and with a wife and several young children, Reuben was conscripted into the Confederate Army August 1, 1863, in Summerville, Ga. He was assigned to Captain Napier of Company K 6th Regiment Georgia Cavalry and served under Joe Wheeler. According to family oral history, Reuben was captured during fighting in Pennsylvania and escaped--making his way home on horseback. He was given amnesty and took the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. He felt that some Southern soldiers were as mean as the Yankees, stealing from their neighbors--his livestock, food, farming implements and everything else was stolen--only his family members had been spared. This caused him and several of his friends to have to hide out in the mountains until the end of the war. His two oldest sons, Robert Cicero and George Dolphus, took food and other needed supplies to their father while he was hiding from bounty hunters and bushwhackers. Reuben did find a mare that was his--a young boy was seen with it and Reuben had to fire at the boy to get his mare back. This was apparently the only possession that was recovered after he came back home. Even after the war ended things were still difficult: the bushwhackers and Confederate loyalists never let up in the search for people they considered Union sympathizers. Many families moved West looking for a better life. Reuben and his family remained in Georgia until 1876-77 before making their way to Arkansas where they joined other family members and friends who had gone on before them....Reuben and his family do not appear in the 1870 census. Many people did not let themselves be counted: Chattooga County was pretty well divided for many years after the war ended and the Federal Army ruled everything." --Descendant Patricia Adale Bramlette.

James Abel Bramblett received his wound during a skirmish "as a remnant of Gen. Johnston's troops bivouacked at Bentonville and attacked a part of Sherman's army as it was making its way back north and home. Grandpa Bramblett had been firing at the enemy across a cornfield and had ducked behind a tree to reload. A Yankee, seeing an opportunity, shot him in the back as the tree was not large enough to conceal him entirely. Thank God the Yankee wasn't a better shot, otherwise I might not have been here today writing to you about such. I have in my possession...the mini-ball that was removed from Grandpa along with his medal which was presented to him by the Daughters of the Confederacy....I have many interesting stories filed away in my memory that were related to me by my Dad of things Grandpa told him about the war. One such story which apparently made a lasting impression on me was when he was standing guard at a bridge in Tennessee with a Yankee sentry standing guard at the other end. They had talked back and forth for most of the night and by mutual agreement laid their weapons down, met in the middle of the bridge and exchanged pleasantries about family back home, how senseless the war was, etc., going back to their posts after becoming acquainted, only to become enemies again." --Descendant Jack Bramblett of Ellijay, Ga.

"After many hours which I was engaged as assistant surgeon, Dr. Walton, of Kentucky, who was in charge, said to us: 'We will not do any more work tonight.' Just then we heard an exclamation from this officer, and I insisted that he be brought in and his wounds dressed. This was done, and he asked me if his wounds were fatal. I told him that the chances were greatly against him. He was shot through the chest and through the leg. He was carried to a shed near by and laid on some unbaled cotton. I gave him some water and brandy. The night was very cold; I got an order for a pair of blankets and placed them over him and told him that I would see him in the morning, but I failed, as he was sent to Nashville very early. He was CAPTAIN PETER BRAMBLETTE, Second [actually Fourth] Kentucky Infantry, of Paris, Ky. Ten days later I saw his death announced in a Nashville paper. Mrs. Payne who was a frequent visitor at the hospital wanted to have a friend of her's paroled and taken to her home, and related to me that she had cared for several Confederate soldiers, one of whom was Captain Bramlett, who had died at her house. She said that when he was about to die she concluded to remove the coarse blankets and replace them with neater ones; that he caught her hand and said: 'No, do not remove those blankets, for they saved my life at Stone's River. They were placed over me that cold night by the hand of the enemy, but a brother. You may come across him sometime; and if you should, tell him I died under the blankets he placed over me that night.' She sent them to his parents in Paris, Ky." -- Dr. F. G. Hickman, of Vandalia, Ill., 1898, in Reminiscences of a Federal Surgeon.

A report to the Hon. E. M. Stanton, U.S. Secretary of War, by E. H. Ludington, Assistant U.S. Inspector-General, on 7 December 1864 exemplifies the central conflict of the Civil War/War Between the States--individuals and states torn between the issues of slavery and home rule--which plagued Governor Thomas E. Bramlette and the residents of his state in 1864. President Abraham Lincoln had suspended the civil government and initiated U.S. Military rule in Kentucky to ensure its loyalty to the cause of the federal goverment: to sustain the union and abolish slavery. This caused bitterness between Governor Bramlette and military officers in the state: Governor Bramlette wanted his state to remain in the Union, but he and many others wanted to retain slavery and home rule in Kentucky. Ludington tells Stanton in his report "A delegation of prominent citizens of Kentucky are now upon their way to Washington to urge upon you a change of policy in the military administration of their State. In view of which, I have the honor to submit the following conclusions relative to such adminstration at which I have arrived, after consultation with many influential citizens of different localities and of conflicting opinions: "I.--The Condition of the State. There is scarcely any security for person or property. In nearly every county guerrillas are destroying the property and taking the lives of all who have been, or now are, in the U.S. armies. The citizens are so bitterly arrayed against each other as to afford immunity, if not assistance, to these desperadoes, for each party is glad to see men of the other murdered. From this intestine hatred guerrillas have their origin and maintenance. "II.--Temper of the People. Kentucky remained in the Union to preserve slavery and avoid becoming the theater of war, although strongly in sympathy with the rebellious States. Being humored and favored for the first two years, many people avowed their devotion to the Union; but the moment that the Government attempted to draft men or enlist negroes, the true feeling of these people was evinced. They resisted our officers, and became more violent in their denunciations of the administration than the original rebels. A large majority of Kentuckians are to-day undoubtedly disloyal. "III.--Character of Troops in Kentucky. The forces consist almost entirely of regiments raised in the State for the term of one year's service within the State. They are generally distributed in very small detachments as soon as organized--never serving together as regiments. As a rule, their officers have little capacity and are entirely ignorant of their duties. There is neither drill nor discipline among the men; they are merely a uniformed mob. Serving at home with their local predjudices, they regard their own interests instead of the country's. They do little to punish guerrillas--much against personal enemies. They capture few men in arms, but show their zeal in seizing unarmed people. They plunder largely at their own discretion. As a natural result their victims, with all their friends, become exasperated against the Government, and thus the very troops it employs to serve it prove its worst enemies. Not a regiment raised in Kentucky ought to serve in the State. "IV.--Civil Administration in Kentucky. Governor Bramlette prefers union to rebellion, but he loves slavery also. He has slender capacity, great vanity, and greater ambition. He hopes to gratify his aspirations for election to U.S. Senate by yielding to the pressure bearing upon him from the slave interests in the State. He knows his people are disloyal, and so qualifies his Unionism. His advisers do not conceal their hostility to enlisting negroes. The Governor's policy is simply self first, State second, Union last. But he has not backbone enough to make a direct issue with the Administration; therefore its policy need not be affected in any way by his views. "V.--Military Administration. Realizing the difficulties surrounding the military administration of affairs in this State, General Burbridge has relied much upon the advice of others. Their predjudices and interests have at times led him astray, but his administration has been mainly a good one. He has shown some vascillation, attributable, no doubt, to his relying upon others. In matters purely military he appears to be somewhat lax. Everything seems to be in confusion. After making every allowance for the inefficiency of field and line officers under his command, there is evident want of capacity or energy. He is now heartily hated by a majority of people in the State, but that signifies nothing if he pursues a policy stringent and impartial. In all I have heard there is nothing to demand his removal, but the substitution of a man stronger in capacity and character would be an advantage. "VI.--Suggestions as to Policy. First. It is absolutely necessary to crush out the guerrillas in the State. This may be effected by placing in each exposed county 100 good troops from another State, mounted and well officered. Second. All troops raised in Kentucky should be assigned to duty elsewhere. They would become efficient, and there would be no objection to the Governor's organizing and officering them, and thus one great cause of complaint upon his part would be removed. No troops should be allowed in State service. Third. Noisy and active sympathizers with rebels and rebellion should be dealt with most rigorously. Offenses should be clearly proved, and after proof, no relenting. Every distinction should be made in favor of active and tried Union men. Fourth. The policy of the Administration should be rigidly enforced, and Kentucky feel herself governed, as she now is not either by civil or military authorities. If the Governor should array himself against the Administration, there should be no hesitancy in superseding him. "Very respectfully submitted, and I have the honor to be, sir, your most obedient servant, E. H Ludington, Assistant Inspector-General." President Abraham Lincoln, concerned in part by the reports of guerrilla raids in Kentucky, proclaimed a suspension of the writ of habeas corpus and renewed the declaration of martial law on July 5, 1864. Gov. Bramlette was angered by the proclamation; he felt innocent people in his state were being unfairly treated by the military. Martial law continued until the close of the war in April 1865. The state legislature met in December 1865 and effected pardons for all who were indicted in the courts for acts of war. The Expatriotation Act and other severe measures taken against Southern soldiers and sympathizers were also repealed by the legislature.
Fort Bramlette at Camp Nelson, about five miles south of Nicholasville in Jessamine Co., Ky., is named after Gov. Bramlette. The fort, constructed of earth and stone on a hill south of the main complex of the Union Army base, overlooks the Kentucky River and Hickman Creek. Camp Nelson, in operation during 1863-65, was a very large and crucial Union Army base during the Civil War. It served as a recruit training camp for regular and colored troops, supply depot, medical facility, fort and refugee camp for families of African-American soldiers who joined the Union Army. Camp Nelson is notable for its key involvement with African American soldiers: It was the third largest recruit and training station for U.S. Colored Troops, who subsequently manned the camp's defenses and participated in military actions in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia.

William C. "Billy" Bramblete [Bramblett], Sgt, Co D, 16th Regt, VA Cav; Captured 10 Jun 1864 [Son of ? and husband of ? born c 1837, died 23-24? Jul 1907, buried near Merritt's Creek, Cabell Co., W.Va., in his Confederate uniform]. In 1850-1860 U.S. Census, Cabell Co., W. Va. He was a school teacher in Cabell County. His obituary in the 25 July 1905 Herald-Dispatch indicates "Mr. Bramblett was an eccentric character and never felt better than when arguing matters. In the civil war he fought with the confederacy and retained his ragged uniform of gray that served him to be buried in that being his request. He was until the day of death an unflinching advocate for what the south fought for."
