United States Colored Troops--Union Army
[Note: the following soldiers who served in U.S. Colored Troops probably were former slaves and/or descendants of slaves. This list provides their rank at enlistment and discharge. Their service records are documented on microfilm at National Archives and Records Administration (NARA Film #M589, Roll 10). The names of these soldiers are inscribed on the African-American Civil War Memorial, unveiled in July 1998 at 10th and U Street NW, in the Shaw neighborhood, Washington, D.C. The monument serves as a tribute to the valor of African American soldiers who served in Union forces and fought for freedom from slavery during the Civil War.]
